According to a Reuters report, two documents show that as Vietnamese leader Su Lin heads to New York next week, American and Vietnamese companies are expected to announce a series of agreements involving energy, technology, aviation, and financial firms. These business agreements—many expected to be non-binding—have been part of Vietnam’s efforts to reassure Washington for several months, as the Trump administration has threatened to impose new tariffs on the export-dependent Southeast Asian nation. An internal planning note lists 29 agreements that may be announced at a business conference in New York attended by Su Lin on September 23. American energy companies Murphy Oil and Chevron are expected to announce agreements with the state-owned Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, while ExxonMobil will announce an agreement with PetroVietnam, Vietnam’s second-largest refinery. According to two officials, the trip also aims to advance trade negotiations with the United States and may finalize a trade agreement that has been under negotiation for more than a year. However, sources say a meeting with Trump is not certain. A White House official said Tuesday that Trump’s schedule has not yet been confirmed.
