According to The Information, Apple (AAPL.US) is planning to develop an enterprise-grade server equipped with its own chips, and the server may integrate networking equipment from Nvidia (NVDA.US) to address the growing demand for Apple computers in the artificial intelligence sector. Sources familiar with the matter said Apple has been developing this server with plans to sell it to artificial intelligence developers, other enterprises, and government agencies. The contemplated product would launch in two versions: a smaller version consisting of a cluster of two M8 Ultra chips (which Apple plans to launch), and a larger version equipped with four M8 Ultra chips. The M-series Ultra chips are Apple's highest-performance chips and power multiple products, including Mac Studio. Sources also revealed that Apple had considered using a suite of Nvidia products called “NVLink Fusion” to connect the M8 chips within the server. This suite includes switches, chiplets, and software that enable the chips to communicate with each other inside the data center. Any such move would further drive a preliminary thawing in the long-standing frosty relationship between the two tech giants.
