01:44 PM EDT, 09/16/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Canadian National Railway's (CNI) US subsidiaries and National Railroad Passenger, known as Amtrak, said Wednesday they have reached a new operating agreement providing an updated framework for Amtrak services on Canadian National-owned rail lines. The new eight-year operating agreement resolves a more than decade-long proceeding before the Surface Transportation Board, and includes a revised performance payment system aligned with the Federal Railroad Administration's on-time performance standard, regular reviews of Amtrak's schedules, and processes for addressing operational issues, the companies said. Canadian National, through US units Illinois Central Railroad and Grand Trunk Western Railroad, also agreed to work with Amtrak on equipping Amtrak trains with Onboard Shunt Enhancers technology to ensure crossing warning systems are activated timely, the companies added.
