According to a report from the Financial Times on the 18th, the Venezuelan government and the opposition are close to reaching an agreement,
to transfer about $4 billion worth of the country's gold reserves from the Bank of England in the UK to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in the United States.

According to several sources familiar with the matter, under the terms of the agreement being discussed, the Venezuelan government led by acting President Delcy Rodríguez will gain legal control over the gold, but will not be able to sell it immediately.

Sources indicated,
this gold may be used as collateral for government borrowing, to cover expenditures including reconstruction efforts after the “6·24” earthquake series, among others.

Reportedly, the potential gold reserve agreement is the result of talks between the Venezuelan government and the opposition, supported by the United States.

Venezuela has 31 tonnes of gold stored at the Bank of England. After the Venezuelan election in 2018, the US, UK, and other countries refused to recognize Nicolás Maduro as the elected president, and the Bank of England froze Venezuela’s gold on these grounds. The Maduro government has repeatedly sought to unfreeze the assets but has not succeeded.
