Massive Bluefin Tuna Fetches Record Price at Tokyo Auction
An enormous bluefin tuna, weighing as much as a typical motorcycle, was purchased for an astonishing 510.3 million yen (approximately $3.2 million) at Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market during the annual New Year auction. The winning bidder was Kiyoshi Kimura, the owner of the Sushi Zanmai restaurant chain and widely known as the “Tuna King.”
This sale broke Kimura’s own previous record from 2019, when he acquired a 612-pound bluefin tuna for about $2.1 million. The newly purchased 535-pound fish is anticipated to be sold at prices reaching up to $13,360 per kilogram (around $6,060 per pound).
