EUR/GBP slips toward 0.8650 as markets await Eurozone HICP data
EUR/GBP Weakens Amid German Economic Data
During early trading hours in Europe on Wednesday, the EUR/GBP pair slipped to around 0.8655. The Euro (EUR) lost ground against the British Pound (GBP) following the release of fresh German economic figures. Later in the day, attention will turn to the preliminary Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) data from the Eurozone.
German Retail Sales Disappoint
According to Destatis, German retail sales dropped by 0.6% in November compared to the previous month, a steeper decline than October’s 0.3% fall and below market expectations for a 0.2% increase. Year-on-year, retail sales rose by 1.1%, slightly higher than the previous 0.9% gain. The Euro experienced a modest dip in response to this weaker-than-expected retail data.
Focus Shifts to Eurozone Inflation
Investors are now awaiting the flash estimate of the Eurozone HICP report. Should inflation figures come in above forecasts, it may help stem further losses for the Euro in the short term. The European Central Bank (ECB) is largely expected to keep interest rates unchanged for now, though some analysts predict possible rate cuts if economic conditions deteriorate.
Bank of England Policy Outlook
The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has indicated that monetary policy will likely ease gradually, but future moves will depend on trends in inflation, wage growth, and service sector prices. According to Reuters, financial markets anticipate at least one rate cut from the UK central bank in the first half of the year, with nearly a 50% probability of a second reduction before year-end. This cautious approach from the BoE could lend some support to the Pound against the Euro.
