Glonghui January 9th|Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Derren Nathan wrote that with Rio Tinto and Glencore confirming that preliminary merger talks are underway, the super merger deal, hailed as the "mother of all mining deals," may be back on the table. He added that while the merger would create a giant with global leadership across multiple metals, a merger is not an automatic path to value creation for investors. He pointed out that while the merger could bring synergies, questions remain over how Glencore's coal business and trading division would integrate with Rio Tinto's business model. Nathan believes that considering Rio Tinto has been committed to enhancing its sustainability credentials, the coal business could be a particularly thorny issue. As a result of the news, Glencore's share price surged by 9%, while Rio Tinto's London-listed shares fell by nearly 2%.
