UK Watchdog Penalizes Reddit For Child Privacy Failure
Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:RDDT) stock was trending on Tuesday after U.K. regulators announced a multi-million-dollar penalty tied to children’s data practices.
The Information Commissioner’s Office said its investigation found Reddit unlawfully processed children’s personal data and failed to implement effective age checks.
The action highlights growing scrutiny on social media companies’ handling of minors’ information and may influence broader tech-sector sentiment, including peers like Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) and Snap Inc. (NYSE:SNAP).
Regulatory Findings And Penalty
The ICO imposed a 14.47 million Sterling Pounds ($19.52 million) fine after concluding that Reddit lacked strong verification systems before mid-2025.
Officials said the platform allowed under-13 users to access services without adequate safeguards.
Investigators also noted the company did not complete a detailed data protection risk review until early 2025.
Regulators argued Reddit relied heavily on self-declared ages, which they consider easy to bypass.
The watchdog warned that weak controls could expose minors to unsuitable content. The ICO continues monitoring new measures introduced in July 2025, including content-based age restrictions and verification prompts.
Regulator’s Statement
U.K. Information Commissioner John Edwards criticized Reddit’s practices, saying: “It’s concerning that a company the size of Reddit failed in its legal duty to protect the personal information of UK children.” He added, “Reddit failed to meet these expectations. They must do better and we are continuing to consider the age assurance controls now implemented by the platform.”
Broader Policy Push
The ICO said children deserve heightened protections under U.K. privacy laws and emphasized compliance with its Children’s Code. Officials also said they will coordinate enforcement with Ofcom under the Online Safety Act.
The regulator plans to examine other services that rely heavily on self-declared ages.
RDDT Price Action: Reddit shares were down 0.31% at $142.02 at the time of publication on Tuesday.

Lombard: GPIF's overweight position in Japanese bonds may trigger global carry trade unwinding; Banco Santander: GPIF may sell $62 billion in US Treasuries!
Lombard Global Macro Research pointed out that GPIF is currently or will soon accelerate the repatriation of funds into Japanese domestic bonds. This structural capital inflow will drive the USD/JPY below 150 and indicates a fair value range between 130 and 140. Furthermore, the risk of passive deleveraging in global carry trades has not yet been fully priced in by the market. Banco Santander noted that, due to the increased attractiveness of domestic Japanese assets under the current policy framework, GPIF may reduce its holdings of US Treasuries by up to $62 billion.
