Obtaining accurate guidance − a talk by Alan Taylor
The Purpose and Future of Central Bank Mandates
Why do central banks have mandates, and how should these mandates change over time? At their core, mandates serve as guiding principles that connect specialized public institutions to the broader goals valued by society. For central banks, these responsibilities are easy to define but challenging to achieve: maintaining price stability to foster overall economic well-being.
From a macroeconomic perspective, these goals are typically reflected in targets such as low inflation, reduced unemployment, steady and sustainable economic growth, and a stable financial system that avoids severe downturns. While some may view these ambitions as overly optimistic, they remain central to the mission of central banks.
