SouthernSun Exited Timken Company (TKR) Despite Its Strong and Durable Brands
SouthernSun Asset Management, LLC, an investment management firm, released its “SouthernSun Small Cap Strategy” fourth-quarter 2025 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded. During the quarter, the Small Cap Composite returned -2.45% on a gross basis (-2.64% net) compared to 2.19% for the Russell 2000 Index and 3.26% return for the Russell 2000 Value Index. The Composite returned 6.21% on a gross basis (5.40% net) over the trailing 12 months compared to 12.81% and 12.59% for the indexes, respectively. The letter highlighted the economic lessons learned during the oil price collapse of 2014-15. Initially seen as a positive development for the global economy, the decline in oil prices later revealed underlying weaknesses, leading to broader economic impacts beyond the energy sector. The author compares this to the current situation with artificial intelligence (AI), cautioning that while AI is now a fundamental aspect of economic planning and decision-making, its associated risks must be carefully analyzed. As the market approaches 2026, the investment landscape is shaped by various scenarios, including valuation compression and overcapacity in AI infrastructure, rather than inevitable outcomes. SouthernSun Asset Management maintains a disciplined, humble approach focused on intrinsic value and is optimistic about the future but remains aware of historical lessons. SouthernSun Small Cap Strategy stated the following regarding The Timken Company (NYSE:TKR) in its fourth quarter 2025 investor letter:
"The Timken Company (NYSE:TKR) After a long and successful investment in TKR, we decided to exit our position in favor of more attractive opportunities. Despite still believing TKR has strong and durable brands in industrial bearings, we don’t expect the company’s strategy of redeploying capital into acquiring industrial motion businesses to create material value for shareholders. The recent CEO transition – the second in as many years - also did not give us confidence that the organization had clear strategic direction or the imperative to drive execution and value creation."

VIPCross-Asset Positioning Amid AI Earnings Scrutiny and the US Election
1. Markets diverged during the week. Between the October 23 and October 30 closes, BTC fell 4.78%, the Nasdaq 100 declined 1.98%, and gold and silver dropped 2.72% and 8.59%, respectively. The DAX, KOSPI, Nikkei 225 and Hang Seng advanced. We focus on differences in growth prospects, valuation sensitivity and risk exposures rather than applying a single directional view across assets. 2. Market reactions to Alphabet's and Intel's earnings brought returns on AI investment into focus. Attention is shifting from the scale of capital expenditure to revenue realization, margins and free cash flow. Lower interest rates can ease discount-rate pressure, but a sustained valuation recovery still requires support from both operating performance and financing conditions. 3. The November 3 US midterm elections and November 6 employment report are key events in the coming week. We monitor how post-election fiscal and legislative agendas may affect interest rates, the dollar and industry operating conditions. Our execution priorities are to manage leverage and concentration, retain margin and exit-liquidity buffers, and avoid treating a single political outcome as an automatic trading signal. 4. Following Binance's disclosure of a security incident, industry attention to endpoint protection, access segregation and coordinated incident response has increased. Key assets to monitor: BTC, the Nasdaq 100, crude oil and gold, alongside upcoming earnings from AAPL, AMD, PLTR, ARM, ANET and QCOM.
