USD/CAD Rises as Canadian Dollar Softens Amid Oil Price Fluctuations

USD/CAD is climbing after two consecutive days of declines, hovering near 1.3600 during Tuesday’s Asian session. The pair’s upward movement comes as the Canadian Dollar, which is closely tied to commodities, loses ground following a pullback in Oil prices. This shift occurred after US President Donald Trump announced intentions to lift certain oil-related sanctions.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude is currently trading at approximately $83.60 per barrel, down from a high of $113.28 reached in the previous session. President Trump also indicated that the conflict with Iran might be resolved “very soon,” as he faces increasing economic and political challenges amid recent volatility in Oil markets.

In related developments, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reportedly discussed the possibility of a coordinated release of emergency oil reserves among its member nations on Monday. This action aims to stabilize the market by temporarily increasing supply and potentially curbing sharp rises in Oil prices.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) remains below 99.00 on Tuesday, following a significant drop the previous day. Optimism for a swift resolution to the Iran situation has diminished the demand for the US Dollar as a safe haven. Investors are now looking ahead to important US inflation indicators, such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, which are scheduled for release later this week. These reports are expected to provide further insight into the Federal Reserve’s policy direction.

Meanwhile, yields on the US 10-year Treasury bond have eased to around 4.11%, down from Monday’s peak of 4.21%. This decline reflects shifting expectations regarding the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate cut, with markets now anticipating the first reduction in July. According to the CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, there is currently a 43% chance of a Fed rate cut that month.

US and Iran Show 'Willingness to Negotiate', Causing Global Energy Prices to Plummet

Iran's Supreme Leader has authorized the government to negotiate, while Trump has explicitly stated he "will not" resume military strikes if re-elected. The energy market is under pressure across the board: Brent crude plummeted over 6% in a single day, WTI fell below the $100 mark, and European benchmark natural gas futures at one point plunged nearly 11%. With the US election approaching, Trump faces both electoral challenges and pressure from Israel to initiate conflict. Iran has proposed a "seven-day plan" as its bottom line for reopening the Strait, with substantial underlying disagreements. Coupled with a sharp global inventory reduction of nearly 1 billion barrels, the downside for oil prices may be limited.
