Canada’s cross-border securities transactions, January 2026
Record-Breaking Investment in Canadian Securities by Foreign Investors
In January 2026, international investors injected $46.7 billion into Canadian securities, with the bulk of this capital flowing into the bond market at levels never seen before. At the same time, Canadians invested $11.4 billion in overseas securities, following a previous month’s investment of $13.1 billion.
This surge in activity resulted in a net inflow of $35.3 billion to Canada’s economy from global securities transactions, marking the highest monthly inflow since October 2025. The strong momentum of foreign investment in Canadian securities, which began in the latter half of last year, continued unabated in January.
