What you should understand about South Pars, the world's biggest natural gas reserve and a crucial resource for Iran, following the Israeli attack
Potential Consequences of Israel's Attack on Major Gas Field
Energy analysts informed ABC News that Israel's recent airstrike on the South Pars natural gas field—the largest of its kind globally—could have significant repercussions for Iran's energy industry and neighboring Gulf nations.
The attack, which took place on Wednesday, targeted South Pars, a massive offshore field in the Persian Gulf spanning roughly 3,700 square miles. This field is a crucial energy source for Iran, containing an estimated 1,800 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas, as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
According to Ira Joseph, a senior research associate at the Center on Global Energy Policy, South Pars supplies nearly 70% of Iran’s domestic gas needs, making it essential to the country’s energy infrastructure.
