Golden Ten Data reported on April 8 that shipowners are racing to interpret the details of a possible ceasefire agreement that may temporarily open the Strait of Hormuz, hoping to take advantage of a potential window to rescue over 800 vessels trapped in the Persian Gulf. It remains unclear whether the US and Iran have agreed on passage fees. However, for shipowners, the current news is enough to foster cautious optimism. The main industry group, the Japanese Shipowners’ Association, stated it will verify the details of the US-Iran agreement before conveying information. Still, most warn that more clarity is required before ships can move, and even in the best-case scenario, it will take time for shipping traffic to recover. In peacetime, about 135 ships pass through each day, a number that has now dropped significantly.
