Asian Markets Decline Amid Unresolved US-Iran Talks

Asian stock indices began the week mostly in the red, following unsuccessful peace negotiations between the United States and Iran over the weekend. US President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces will implement a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Nikkei 225 in Japan fell by 0.8%, South Korea’s KOSPI Index slipped 0.85%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped 1.16%. In contrast, China’s Shanghai Composite Index remained nearly unchanged. Meanwhile, European stock futures are showing mixed results, and US futures suggest a weak start for Wall Street.

Investor confidence is subdued, as the breakdown in peace talks and rising oil prices—triggered by Trump’s announcement that US forces will block Iranian vessels starting at 10:00 Eastern Time (14:00 GMT) on Monday—have heightened tensions. This move is intended to pressure China, which is Iran’s primary oil customer.

Ceasefire Holds, Uncertainty Lingers

President Trump stated he is indifferent to Iran’s willingness to resume negotiations, yet the ceasefire that began last Wednesday remains intact. This ongoing truce leaves open the possibility for renewed discussions, helping to prevent deeper declines in global stock markets.

Iranian officials have cautioned that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz violates the ceasefire agreement. The Revolutionary Guard has warned that any military ships approaching the region will face strong retaliation. With a light economic calendar on Monday, developments in the Middle East are expected to continue influencing market movements. Looking ahead to Tuesday, investors will be watching China’s March Trade Balance data, US Producer Price Index (PPI) figures, and speeches from Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey and European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde.

AI giants have made a rare joint call to slow down the development of advanced models. Compared to the September 11 closing price of $236.10, this target implies a potential upside of approximately 54.6%.
