Everbright Futures 0415 Gold Commentary: PPI Eases Inflation Concerns, Gold Continues to Perform Strongly
Overnight, the precious metals market saw a significant rise, with COMEX gold surging approximately 2% throughout the day, continuing its recent strong trend.
The U.S. Department of Labor released data showing that the U.S. PPI (Producer Price Index) for March rose 4% year-on-year. While this is the highest level since February 2023, it is notably below market expectations of 4.6%, and the month-on-month increase was only 0.5%, also lower than expected. At the same time, core PPI rose only 0.1% month-on-month, far below both the expected 0.5% and the previous value of 0.5%. Overall, the PPI data was moderate, alleviating some market concerns over short-term runaway inflation. However, analysts point out that there is a lag in the transmission of rising energy prices to core inflation, and the potential risk of price pressure passing downstream remains over the next few months. In addition, Goldman Sachs believes that the energy shock from the U.S.-Iran conflict constitutes only "mild stagflation," making it unlikely for inflation to spiral out of control as it did in 2022, and maintains its prediction that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates twice this year, in September and December.
On the geopolitical front, Trump stated that talks with Iran "may take place within the next two days" in Pakistan. In addition, talks between Israel and Lebanon held in the United States have concluded, with U.S. officials claiming that an agreement was reached to disarm Hezbollah. Judging from financial market performance over the past two days, the market remains optimistic about the possibility of ending the U.S.-Iran conflict through negotiations, with risk appetite consistently moving in a favorable direction. This continues to provide a supportive backdrop for gold. However, the volatility of the geopolitical process cannot be ignored, and there is still a need to be alert to the short-term impact on gold prices should negotiations break down.
In summary, with PPI data easing inflation concerns, expectations of rate cuts persisting, and geopolitical tensions moving toward negotiations, gold is expected to maintain its strong performance in the short term. In terms of strategy, traders are advised to remain cautiously optimistic, pay attention to developments in the U.S.-Iran negotiations and subsequent changes in inflation data, while also managing positions to guard against short-term volatility risks caused by renewed geopolitical tensions.
