Disney's new CEO announced the company's long-term vision on Wednesday, centering on leveraging technology to reach consumers and enhance corporate profits.

Disney released its quarterly earnings and held an analyst call. The new CEO, Josh D’Amaro, simultaneously issued an open letter to shareholders, nearly 3,000 words, and made relevant remarks during the meeting. He emphasized the strategic plan: to make Disney+ the digital core hub for all of the group’s businesses and to increase investment in new technologies, with a particular focus on the gaming sector.

Disney CFO Hugh Johnston also responded to popular investor concerns, making it clear that the company has no intention of selling or spinning off its traditional cable TV business, including the entertainment sports channel ESPN.

In the second fiscal quarter ending March 28, Disney's revenue reached $25.17 billion, an increase of 7% year over year; net profit dropped by about 30% to $2.25 billion, mainly due to a one-time tax gain in the same period last year. Excluding special items, earnings per share rose 8% to $1.57, beating analyst expectations, largely thanks to continued improvements in streaming business profit margins.

D’Amaro stated that the Disney+ streaming platform will become the primary core vehicle for maintaining relationships between Disney and its fans. In the short term, the company will focus on expanding short video content and optimizing algorithm recommendations to reduce user churn; in the long term, it will also launch gaming services and integrate related offerings such as Disney park travel planning.

When asked about the decline in TV network business revenue, Johnston said that selling or spinning off that business is extremely complex, and given the current market valuation of the traditional cable TV sector, such a move would hardly create real value for shareholders.

The CFO acknowledged that ESPN is still lagging behind the entertainment business in its digital transformation process, but he stated that sports content helps reduce churn among streaming users. Thanks to its vast and mature business layout, Disney has a natural advantage over competitors in monetizing the high costs of sports broadcasting rights.

Disney’s partnership with OpenAI broke down at the end of March, triggered by the ChatGPT developer’s halting of the Sora video generation tool project. D’Amaro and Johnston said the company is still exploring potential business collaborations with OpenAI and other firms.

AI Trading Logic Shifts! From Japan and Korea to the US, Global Chip Stocks Plummet, Star IPOs Stalled, Changxin Technology Breakthroughs Raise Repeated Alarms

Among AI-related stocks that have risen significantly this year, storage chip stocks are particularly prone to profit-taking; under crowded trading and high valuations, new signs of competition are enough to trigger concentrated selling. According to Wall Street sources, Changxin Technology's 4F² DRAM architecture has provided investors with an opportunity to take profits. While its technological advancements are indeed significant, they should not be directly regarded as an immediate threat to existing manufacturers. The AI rally has not ended and may be entering its next phase, with investors focusing more on realizing profits rather than purely betting on infrastructure expansion.
