Is the silver bull market back? A sudden 7% surge in a single day—what happened?

Silver prices recorded a significant single-day surge of over 7%, marking the strongest performance in recent times. The pullback in oil prices and the weakening of the US dollar have eased previous macroeconomic pressures on precious metals. Surpassing expectations in employment data and a supply-demand gap in industrial demand driven by AI and photovoltaics are jointly providing structural support for the rise in silver prices.

The immediate catalysts for this rally come from the simultaneous resonance of multiple factors. The weakening US dollar, combined with a pullback in oil prices, has provided breathing room for previously inflation-suppressed precious metals; US non-farm payrolls increased by 115,000—well above the market’s expectation of 62,000. This combination of "resilient economy and controllable inflation" has created an ideal macro backdrop for precious metals.

The structural upgrade in industrial demand is the core logic that distinguishes this white metals rally from gold. The year 2026 is seen as a critical year for the large-scale rollout of AI data centers, with silver use in high-performance connectors and semiconductor packaging growing beyond expectations. At the same time, global photovoltaic installations continue to remain at high levels, further intensifying the tight supply-demand situation for silver.

On the capital side, speculators with low positions and the potential momentum-chasing effect of CTA systematic strategies could further amplify subsequent volatility.

Oil Price Pullback and Weakening Dollar Ease Macroeconomic Pressures

The macro backdrop for this silver price rally lies in the apparent relaxation of two major pressures that previously plagued the precious metals market.

Previously, Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz pushed up oil prices, causing the US PCE inflation rate to jump from 2.8% in February to 3.5% in March, which heightened market expectations of tighter Federal Reserve policy and put pressure on precious metals prices. As energy prices have retreated recently, the narrative supporting inflation has been significantly weakened.

Meanwhile, the weakening dollar makes dollar-denominated commodities more attractive to overseas buyers, further boosting demand-side expectations. The simultaneous turnaround of these two macro factors has opened up space for silver’s strong rebound.

Industrial Demand Support Plus Surprising Employment Data Drives Down Gold/Silver Ratio

The latest non-farm payroll data provided additional support for the market. In April, US non-farm payrolls soared by 115,000—far exceeding the expected 65,000—marking the strongest consecutive growth in nearly a year.

The unemployment rate held steady at 4.3%, while year-over-year wage growth slowed to 3.6%, alleviating some inflation concerns. The market generally believes its impact on reigniting inflation will be limited.

Economic resilience has reduced recession risks, and moderate employment growth has not triggered a new wave of inflation concerns. This combination has traditionally been an ideal macro scenario for precious metals’ performance.

The structural upgrade in industrial demand is the core logic that differentiates this white metals rally from gold. The year 2026 is expected to see the large-scale launch of AI data centers, with silver usage in high-performance connectors and semiconductor packaging increasing beyond expectations. Simultaneously, global photovoltaic installations continue at a high level, further aggravating the tight supply-demand situation for silver.

The combination of these two industrial demand drivers has led silver to face a structural supply gap and directly pushed the gold/silver ratio continuously downward—in other words, against a favorable macro backdrop, silver’s gains have clearly outpaced gold, and the market’s expectations for silver to play catch-up are gradually materializing.

Potential resonance in the capital side is also worth noting. Goldman Sachs previously pointed out that CTA strategies exhibit convexity on both sides for silver, meaning that large price swings in either direction may trigger systematic programmatic buying or selling. In addition, the current speculative long positioning in silver is relatively low, and if prices continue to firm up, potential momentum-driven entrants may further amplify upward volatility.
