Russian Ruble stablecoin A7A5 plans to transform into a long-term cross-border settlement tool

Foresight News reported, citing CoinDesk, that the stablecoin A7A5, which is pegged to the Russian ruble, is seeking to transform from a sanctions-evasion tool into a long-term settlement instrument for Russian trade. A7A5 executive Oleg Ogienko stated that even if sanctions are lifted, A7A5 could remain competitive by offering fast, non-dollar cross-border settlements and returns pegged to the high Russian interest rates (currently about 13.5%). At present, A7A5 has a market capitalization of about $500 million.

In addition, A7A5's expansion still faces restrictions from Western financial infrastructure and Russia's draft crypto regulation. This draft proposes to limit the annual investment amount for non-qualified investors to 300,000 rubles (nearly $4,000). Ogienko said that A7A5 is participating in consultations on this regulatory framework, noting that future central bank digital currencies (CBDC) are more focused on budget supervision rather than commercial use, and thus will not pose competition.
