Rising above 6.78, the RMB/USD exchange rate hits its highest level since mid-February 2023

May 27 — As of publication, the spot RMB-to-USD exchange rate reached a session high of 6.7790, breaking above the 6.78 mark for the first time since February 10, 2023. The offshore RMB-to-USD rate, which more reflects international investor expectations, also broke above the 6.78 mark on May 27, with a session high of 6.77825—again, the first time since February 10, 2023. Wang Qing, Chief Macro Analyst at Dongfang Jincheng, stated that the strengthening of the RMB against the USD today was mainly driven by declining safe-haven demand amid evolving Middle East developments, which led to USD weakness. However, since May, the US Dollar Index has risen by about 1%, while the onshore RMB has appreciated by roughly 0.75% against the USD, showing a "dual strength" pattern. Behind this are the US President's visit to China this month, which has boosted market confidence in the stabilization of China's external economic and trade environment, plus widespread expectations that China's exports will maintain strong momentum in the coming period. "We judge that the RMB exchange rate will generally maintain inverse fluctuations with the USD, with relatively small volatility. In the short term, driven by robust export growth, the RMB's moderately strong trend will continue. However, with the USD stabilizing and expectations for timely use of RMB market stabilization tools by regulators, a significant unilateral appreciation of the RMB is unlikely in the near future," Wang Qing said.
