Bank of Japan recorded a record loss on Japanese government bond holdings in the previous fiscal year

Golden Ten Data, May 27 — The Bank of Japan announced on Wednesday that it recorded a historic loss on its holdings of Japanese government bonds in the previous fiscal year, highlighting the significant valuation impact on its portfolio as the central bank shifts toward higher interest rates. In the fiscal year ending March, the unrealized loss on its Japanese government bond holdings reached 45.441 trillion yen (approximately $28.526 billion), surpassing the 28.625 trillion yen loss recorded in the previous year. This marks the largest loss since comparable data became available. Bank of Japan officials have long asserted that such losses do not affect monetary policy decisions because the bank intends to hold these bonds to maturity, meaning these book losses will not be realized. Since exiting the negative interest rate policy in 2024, the Bank of Japan has gradually but steadily tightened monetary policy, thereby pushing up Japanese government bond yields. Market concerns have intensified recently as Middle East conflicts have driven up oil prices, raising fears that the Bank of Japan may be falling behind in the fight against inflation. If this situation persists, the bank's book losses on Japanese government bonds could deepen further. Another factor pushing up Japanese government bond yields is the government's fiscal stimulus plan, which has amplified market worries over Japan's debt burden.
