"Our responsibility is not production for production's sake, but to produce in a safe, efficient, and profitable manner," Chairman Bernardo Fontaine said in a statement on Thursday. At Thursday's meeting, the board agreed to maximize contributions to the country as much as possible while avoiding further increases to debt, which is already near historical highs. This statement indicates a shift in strategic focus. Former Chairman Máximo Pacheco was committed to restoring production growth after repeated setbacks in old mine renovation projects. Now, strengthening scrutiny of investment decisions may restrain expansion plans; amid rising copper demand driven by the energy transition and data center construction, this could also help maintain tightness in the global copper market supply.
