(1) Raw sugar futures rose 2.2% on Friday to 14.24 cents per pound, rebounding sharply from Thursday's four-week low. Despite oil prices falling significantly due to the possibility of a ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran, raw sugar surged against the trend. (2) Brazil, the world's largest sugar producer, had a strong start to sugarcane harvesting, but institutions indicate it may be unrealistic to expect Brazil's sugar production to maintain its current strong pace. Meanwhile, the monsoon outlook in India, the second-largest sugar producer, is causing concerns. (3) India predicts that the El Niño phenomenon in 2026 will weaken the monsoon, leading to the lowest rainfall in 11 years. This raises worries about crops, food prices, and economic growth. Higher energy prices typically benefit sugar prices, as they encourage mills to produce more ethanol fuel instead of sugar. (4) Arabica coffee fell 1.7% to $2.6955 per pound. Colombia, the second-largest Arabica coffee producer, saw a decline in exports, tightening the market, but Brazil's expected bumper harvest will significantly improve supply, although harvest progress is currently slow. (5) London cocoa dipped 0.1%, while New York cocoa dropped 0.6%. Institutional analysts say crop conditions in Côte d’Ivoire are good, offering a positive outlook for the main seasonal crops starting in the second half of the year.

BUZZ - Goldman Sachs says the price cap on cancer drugs has limited impact on Indian hospitals

October 9 – Goldman Sachs pointed out that India's implementation of a 30% profit margin cap on non-scheduled anticancer drugs (link) will have limited impact on hospitals. The report states that, based on preliminary discussions with hospital chain groups, such drugs account for less than 5% of hospital revenue and 2% to 2.5% of operating profit. The report adds that hospitals can offset the losses by slightly adjusting service charges, such as administration fees. According to a government notice, an expert committee will finalize the list of drugs to be brought under regulation. Driven by the anticipated price cap, the share prices of Max Healthcare MAXE.NS, Apollo Hospitals APLH.NS, and Fortis Healthcare FOHE.NS rose by 1.6% to 2.5%. Previously, since September 30, these stocks had collectively declined by 11% to 11.5%. Year-to-date, FOHE and MAXE are down 11.7% and 14.8%, respectively, while APLH has risen by 11%.
