⑴ US natural gas futures rose about 3% on Friday, reaching a 16-week high. The July delivery contract settled at $3.368 per million British thermal units, up about 15% for the week and around 20% for the month, driven by warmer-than-normal weather expected in the next two weeks and higher-than-anticipated cooling demand. ⑵ Institutional data shows that since May, average natural gas production across the 48 contiguous US states has dropped to 109.5 billion cubic feet per day, compared to 109.8 billion in April and 110.6 billion last December. Meanwhile, due to several plants undergoing spring maintenance, the average intake at LNG export facilities has declined from a record daily high of 18.8 billion cubic feet in April to 17.1 billion since May. ⑶ Weather forecasts indicate that temperatures will remain mostly above normal through June 13, pushing up natural gas consumption at power plants for air conditioning. About 40% of US electricity is generated by gas-fired power plants. Institutions expect total demand across the contiguous 48 states to dip slightly from 100.3 billion cubic feet this week to 99 billion next week, then rebound to 101.5 billion two weeks from now. ⑷ Currently, only one LNG vessel is sailing directly from the US to its destination, compared to up to five ships at peak last week. The US remains the world’s largest producer, consumer, and exporter of natural gas.
