Chris Turner from ING stated in a report that the Bank of Japan may take further intervention measures to curb any decline of the yen against the US dollar, which would have an impact on US Treasury bonds. He mentioned that Japanese government departments have reportedly sold US Treasury bonds, seemingly to provide funding for foreign exchange intervention. "In 2024, US Treasury holdings by Japan decreased by about 100 billion dollars—roughly matching the amount of foreign exchange intervention during that year." He said that if the US dollar breaches the 160 yen threshold again, Japan may intervene. He noted that Japan holds over 1 trillion dollars in foreign exchange reserves, although the country does not want to lose 20%-30% of those reserves just to defend the yen. On Friday, the Japanese Ministry of Finance said that between April 28 and May 27, Japan spent about 73.69 billion dollars on foreign exchange intervention.
