The AI boom intensifies inflation, potentially becoming the next major concern

(1) The energy crisis in Iran may be overshadowing a bigger inflation concern: the AI investment frenzy is accumulating momentum at the price level. This year, global corporate investment in AI is expected to exceed $800 billion, reaching trillions of dollars in the coming years. This is boosting construction and factory production, and due to bottlenecks and shortages in memory chips, tech devices, and software, it is pushing up prices. (2) A Federal Reserve research report points out that the "computer software and accessories" category in the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index has seen an abnormal surge, with flash drive prices soaring by about 70%. This is driven by a surge in chip demand from global data center construction and tight memory supply in South Korea. Although statistical deviations may exaggerate the increase, the price rise itself is undeniable. (3) Deutsche Bank strategists indicate that the wave of AI capital expenditure is essentially inflationary, and signs of demand-driven inflation are evident everywhere. Morgan Stanley warns that if the heat of AI more clearly passes through to the price level, accumulating price pressures in areas such as chips and semiconductors could push up core inflation, forcing the Federal Reserve to resume interest rate hikes.

BUZZ-Revolution Medicines stock drops due to concerns over pancreatic cancer drug data

On October 8, Revolution Medicines (RVMD.O) shares fell 8.1% in afternoon trading to $185.91. RBC Capital Markets stated that the share price decline appeared to be driven by the latest U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review documents regarding the company's pancreatic cancer drug Rasonque, particularly the disclosure of objective response rate data for specific RAS mutation subgroups. RBC pointed out that overall survival, rather than objective response rate, is a more meaningful indicator of efficacy, and that the sell-off overlooked Rasonque's broad activity across a variety of RAS mutation subgroups. RBC stated: "While we acknowledge that today's share price decline takes place against the backdrop of overall weakness in the biotech sector, we still believe that the market's reaction to the FDA review documents is an overreaction, given that the drug was approved on the basis of highly clinically meaningful efficacy and has received positive feedback from physicians." Including intraday fluctuations, the stock has more than doubled year-to-date.
