Ripple’s David Schwartz Answers: Is Russia Posing a Threat To XRP?

Ripple’s David Schwartz Answers: Is Russia Posing a Threat To XRP?

With both Iran & Russian actively employing blockchain technology to evade Western-imposed sanctions, Bitcoin (BTC) & stablecoins were the talk of the town, but a recent legislation coming from the Duma had shifted the attention to XRP as a means of cross-border payment.

This has put Crypto Twitter on : mostly due to geopolitical security, which could in theory wind up in one of the globe’s authoritarian regimes taking over a public ledger. A crypto holder from Finland asked this question, soon getting a response from Ripple’s CTO David Schwartz:

“How resilient is the XRPL consensus mechanism against state-level interference? Could an authoritarian regime like Putin’s co-opt or disrupt the UNL/validator network to weaponize the ledger?”

Fear Mongering Or a Real Takeover Possibility?

Here’s what David ‘JoelKatz’ Schwartz had to say on the matter: “It would not surprise me if state level actors could cause temporary disruptions of blockchains, including XRPL.” The reply is somewhat calming, as Ripple’s Emeritus is very skeptical about long-term damage to the XRP Ledger.

Instead, Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) assured the public on Crypto Twitter that “Whatever weaknesses or bugs they exploit can be fixed because software can always be changed.” Another member immediately questioned whether a tech-savvy government could actually kill the network’s validator nodes.

Once again, Ripple’s CTO confirmed this kind of hacking would be extremely hard to carry out – unless no one is brave enough to actually run a network validator node. Even if that happens, Ripple’s David Schwartz has the ultimate solution: XRP’s validator nodes could go completely anonymous & run on privacy-first browsers like Tor.

Also, Ripple’s JoelKatz insists that a double-layered consensus mechanism would prevent such cyberattacks from happening. With this solution, the outermost layer comes in to save the internal one, shielding the XRP Ledger from a manipulative takeover.

Big-Time XRP Appreciation Or Pragmatic Play?

The timing of this discussion is not coincidental: Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has freshly signed an XRP-inclusive crypto bill in April, says local media. The deed opened the doors for commercial use of globally popular digital assets, but kept the retail payments category illegal.

However, the big breakthrough came in mid-May, 2026.

Out of nowhere, the Moscow Exchange (MOEX) launched a Ruble-settled XRP coin Futures contract, as well as an official XRP Index. This allows stock traders to trade leveraged XRP positions during the business hours, applying a conservative leverage from 5 to 10x.

While this might look like a crypto embrace, most financial market specialists claim this was a pragmatic move to evade SWIFT & other traditional banking corridors. However, the XRP trading volumes on MOEX aren’t significant, pulling in hundreds or thousands of dollars a day.

Why XRP Is Uniquely Positioned Against Hazards

In XRP Ledger’s making, the sheer quantity of network nodes means less than trustworthiness & quality. With the Default Unique Node List (dUNL), there’s around 35 validators (this is the trusted list most nodes follow by default). This qualifies as a Federated Consensus Model, meaning that a complete takeover would require more than 80% of node power.

That’s a way higher figure than the regular 50% on public Layer-1 blockchains with thousands of validators like Solana (SOL) or Ethereum (ETH).

Moreover, XRP’s chain has a specific feature that lets the network quickly remove bad actors via the Negative UNL if the network is proven to be disrupted by them – despite XRP’s inclusive nature, the validator list can still be modified.

People Also Ask:

What did David Schwartz actually say?

He admitted that a powerful country like Russia could most definitely cause short-term problems for the XRP Ledger. But he is very skeptical about any long-term damage or takeover.

Could Russia take control of the XRP Ledger?

Not really. Schwartz explained it would be extremely difficult. The network can quickly replace bad validators, make them anonymous using tools like Tor, and even upgrade its consensus rules if needed.

Why are people so concerned about Russia?

Russia recently passed a law allowing crypto for international payments and launched an official XRP index on its Moscow Exchange. Some people fear this means Russia wants to control or weaponize the ledger.

Is Russia trying to “take over” XRP?

Not really, at least not in a direct way. Russia is simply using XRP’s chain as a practical tool to bypass sanctions and move money faster. They are not trying to seize or control the entire blockchain.

What should XRP holders take from this?

The XRP Ledger is designed to be resilient. Even if a country causes temporary trouble, the network can adapt and keep running. Schwartz is confident the ledger is strong enough to handle these risks.
