Japan's food prices in May rose by 3.5% year-on-year, unchanged from the previous month; rice prices fell by 4.9% for the first time.
- In May, Japan's food prices rose by 3.5% year-on-year, the same as in April, marking the slowest growth rate since October 2024. Within the various categories, fish and seafood increased by 5.5%, meat by 3.5%, dairy and eggs by 3.6%, oils and seasonings by 3.9%, pastries and sweets by 8.1%, ready-made foods by 4.4%, beverages by 8.7%, alcoholic drinks by 0.2%, and dining out by 1.0%. Except for pastries and sweets, all other categories saw a narrowing growth rate compared to the previous month.
- After falling for five consecutive months, the price of fresh vegetables rebounded by 3.8%. The price of grains turned negative for the first time since December 2021, declining by 0.9%. Fresh fruit continued its deflationary trend, dropping 1.6%. Among staple foods, the price of rice fell by 4.9% year-on-year, marking the first annual decrease since November 2022. This indicates a divergence in Japan’s domestic food inflation structure, with cost pressures persisting in some categories but an overall slowdown in price increases.
