North Sea oil and gas policies face an adjustment window as the new UK government must rebalance energy security and climate goals

  1. The changes in UK politics provide an opportunity to adjust the North Sea oil and gas strategy. The incoming prime minister faces the pressing challenge of balancing long-term climate commitments with the need to reduce energy bills for residents and businesses. This issue has been further amplified by Trump's criticism of current energy policies.
  2. The previous government accelerated the expected decline of the North Sea basin by raising taxes to one of the highest levels globally and restricting new exploration. Their logic was that prolonging fossil fuel production conflicts with climate targets, and reducing reliance on volatile energy sources helps strengthen economic resilience in the long term.
  3. However, analysts point out that as long as fossil fuels remain at the core of the economy, there are still strong reasons to prioritize domestic production over imports. Each barrel of domestic output reduces reliance on imports from geopolitically sensitive regions, and imported LNG has carbon emissions 60% to 70% higher than domestic pipeline gas. At the same time, the oil and gas industry supports a large number of jobs and investments.
  4. Although renewable energy is developing rapidly, the intermittent nature of wind power means natural gas generation remains a key support for system stability. The North Sea still holds about 1.12 billion barrels of oil equivalent in potential resources. Norway has proven through continuous exploration and development that mature oil fields can have their lifespans extended. If the new UK government appropriately relaxes restrictions and clarifies the tax framework, it can simultaneously strengthen energy security, support the economy, and reduce emissions.
