Golden Ten Data reported on June 25th that, according to informed officials, Iran estimates that charging for security, protection, and environmental services in the Strait of Hormuz will generate $40 billion in annual revenue for the countries involved. If this idea is implemented, it would provide Tehran with cash flow and control that it did not possess before the war. These officials stated that the Iranian regime is drawing on models from around the world, including the Dardanelles Strait. In the Dardanelles Strait, Turkey imposes a tax called the "gold franc" on vessels traveling to and from the Aegean Sea to cover transit costs through this international waterway. According to Iranian officials, in order to gain support, Tehran is promoting this idea to a broader range of Middle Eastern and even more distant countries. They stated that Iran hopes its Persian Gulf neighbors will also join the agreement and share in the revenue. Iranian parliamentary speaker Ghalibaf visited Oman on Tuesday and, while discussing the proposed arrangement with neighboring countries, stated that everyone needs to understand that the way the strait is managed will never return to the way it was before.
