Bridgewater’s flagship macro fund gains 8% in first half as AI strategy matches pace

Bridgewater Associates’ Pure Alpha fund, the firm’s flagship macro strategy, returned 8.1% in the first half of 2026. That’s a solid result by any measure, though it’s a step down from the blistering 17% the fund posted in the first half of 2025.

What makes this round of results particularly interesting isn’t just Pure Alpha’s performance. It’s that Bridgewater’s newer AI-driven fund, AIA Macro, delivered the exact same 8.1% return over the same period.

The numbers behind the numbers

Pure Alpha’s 8.1% gain came during a period of significant market volatility tied to the Iran war. For context, the S&P 500 rose 9.67% over the same period. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 12.48%.

The AIA Macro fund manages approximately $4.5 billion in assets. Since its launch in late 2023, it has delivered an 11.3% annualized return.

Bridgewater’s total assets under management now stand at roughly $102 billion. The firm continues to restrict inflows to Pure Alpha.

A firm in transition

The founder sold his remaining stake in 2025 and exited the board. CEO Nir Bar Dea has been leading a strategic overhaul since 2023. The AIA Macro fund was launched under co-CIO Greg Jensen.

The full-year 2025 numbers tell the broader story of Bridgewater’s resurgence. Pure Alpha returned roughly 33-34% for all of 2025.

What this means for investors

Pure Alpha has decades of track record while AIA Macro has roughly two and a half years. AIA Macro’s 11.3% annualized return since inception suggests this isn’t a fluke.

Bridgewater’s results contain no references to digital asset exposure. Ray Dalio has previously mentioned allocating around 1% of his personal portfolio to Bitcoin and has floated the idea of a potential 15% allocation to Bitcoin or gold. But Dalio no longer runs the firm, and there’s no indication that Bridgewater’s institutional strategies have meaningfully incorporated crypto.

The restriction on Pure Alpha inflows means performance preservation is the priority over asset gathering.

How does Wall Street view the PCE? Goldman Sachs delays expectation for Fed rate hike

After the lower-than-expected US August PCE data was released, Goldman Sachs delayed its expectation for the Federal Reserve's second rate hike from October to December, and stated that it does not rule out the possibility that the Fed may eventually decide no further hikes are necessary. "New Fed Newsletter" Timiraos noted that the PCE does not change the previously known trend of rising inflation. Currently, the market prices in a 39% probability of a rate hike in October, down from 45% before the PCE release; and a 90% probability in December. The yield on 2-year US Treasury notes dipped slightly after the PCE announcement and then rebounded, while the 10-year yield continued to rise.
