Merz pointed out that the German government, which still holds more than 12% of shares in Commerzbank, did not sell its shares to UniCredit, but a "significant proportion" of investors made different decisions. Merz stated that he agrees Europe needs large, competitive banks, and that the ownership structure of companies should be determined by shareholders rather than the government. However, he hopes to learn more about the relevant business model, as Commerzbank plays an important role in providing financing for medium and small-sized enterprises in Germany.
