Golden Ten Data reported on July 16 that the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) released data on Thursday showing the UK economy achieved growth in May, indicating that consumers and businesses demonstrated greater resilience in the face of political turmoil and rising energy prices than markets had previously expected. In May, UK GDP rose 0.1% month-on-month, reversing the 0.1% decline in April. This economic improvement comes amid a climate of political turmoil and an energy crisis in the UK. At the time, Labour Party leader Starmer suffered a major defeat in the May local elections, making it difficult for him to maintain power, and the British public began to anticipate another change in prime minister. Meanwhile, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East continued to push up oil prices and dampen market confidence. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) recently warned in a report that Burnham, who is set to succeed Starmer as UK prime minister next Monday, will inherit an economy facing “major challenges.”
