Rhine River water levels rebound from record lows, doubling Germany’s shipping costs in two weeks

  1. Rainfall in southwestern Germany has caused a slight rebound in the water level of the Rhine River from previous lows. Inland shipping authorities expect the river level to continue rising over the coming days, providing some relief to the freight industry, which has long suffered from shallow water conditions.
  2. Previously, heatwaves and scarce rainfall led to critically low water levels. Cargo vessels could only sail partially loaded, forcing goods to be distributed across multiple ships. German industry, just beginning to recover, faced additional logistics costs.
  3. On Thursday, the navigable depth at the Kaub section was about 45 centimeters, which is forecast to reach 68 centimeters by Saturday. At that point, ships will be able to carry heavier loads, although actual water depth will still be below normal levels.
  4. The freight rate for oil tanker barges from Rotterdam to Karlsruhe has surged to around €115 per ton, almost double the roughly €65 earlier this week and significantly higher than the €45 at the end of June.
  5. The Rhine River is a vital transport artery for bulk commodities such as grain, minerals, coal, and refined oil products. In the summer of 2022, drought and heatwaves also caused abnormally low water levels, resulting in supply chain bottlenecks and problems for industrial production.
  6. Current improvements in water levels have brought some localized relief, but bulk commodity traders point out that the fundamental issues are far from resolved. Transport costs continue to rise, and if rainfall falls short of expectations, the recovery process for German industry may face further disruption.

The continuous rise in sovereign debt, high interest rates, and persistent inflation are all weakening the traditional “safety net” relied upon by governments and central banks.
