Golden Ten Data July 29 — United Microelectronics announced that its board of directors has approved an investment plan of NT$148.68 billion (US$4.6 billion) to increase production capacity. According to another statement, the plan includes expanding the cleanroom capacity at the Singapore plant, while simultaneously starting the new plant shell project at the Tainan Science Park in Taiwan. In Singapore, UMC will invest in the fourth phase of its facility to build new cleanrooms and acquire equipment, aiming to expand its silicon photonics production capacity. The newly constructed wafer fab in Taiwan will serve as the base for future seventh and eighth phase facilities. This dual-track capacity expansion plan is designed to meet customers’ near-term needs, while also strategically deploying for high-growth fields such as AI and edge computing in the long run.
