US President Trump stated that this joint US-Japan purchase of yen is a "signal of friendship," and Treasury Secretary Bessent also said the government would honor its commitments to allies. However, most observers believe this is not simply an act of goodwill, but rather is driven by clear US self-interest.
Analysis indicates that one reason the US acted to help Japan (bringing the yen back from nearly a 40-year low) includes supporting the declining approval ratings of its conservative ally, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. At the same time, the US hopes Japan will continue with its $550 billion investment plan in the US and may seek more concessions in trade negotiations.
More critically, Bessent has long been concerned that Japanese policy could impact the $31 trillion US Treasury market. On the day of the intervention, the 10-year US Treasury yield hit its highest level since he took office, and this yield is Bessent’s main metric; therefore, this US action also stems from deeper concerns for the stability of its own bond market.
