In addition to reporting a loss of 23,000 jobs across the economy in July, the Labor Department Friday cut its estimated hiring gains during the previous two months:
-- May: 63,000 jobs created, down from a previous estimate of 129,000.
-- June: 20,000 jobs gained, down from a previous estimate of 57,000.
