Forecasts for $1M Bitcoin price deemed too ambitious

The $1M Bitcoin thesis has graduated from fringe Twitter speculation to boardroom presentation material. ARK Invest, Bernstein, VanEck, and MicroStrategy’s Michael Saylor have all attached their names to seven-figure targets, with timelines ranging from 2028 to 2033.

What the bull case actually requires

Bitcoin currently trades near $64,000. Getting to $1 million means roughly 15 to 16 times growth from here. The most coherent version of the bull case runs through the global store-of-value market, which analysts estimate at around $121 trillion. Bitcoin currently holds approximately 4% of that market, a share dominated by gold. To justify a $1 million price tag, Bitcoin would need to capture something closer to 17% of that addressable market, a more than fourfold increase in relative share.

ARK Invest’s high-end scenario puts Bitcoin at $1.5 million by 2030. Bernstein takes a more measured line, projecting a near-term target of $150,000 while keeping $1 million as a long-term directional goal rather than a hard forecast.

Where the skeptics push back

The stock-to-flow model, popularized by the pseudonymous analyst PlanB, has historically pointed toward $500,000 to $1 million per Bitcoin in a given cycle. The model draws an analogy to precious metals: assets that are hard to produce tend to hold value well, and Bitcoin’s halving mechanism makes new supply progressively scarcer over time.

Some cycle-based analysts have converged on a more conservative range: a peak somewhere between $300,000 and $500,000 by 2029, driven by the continued ripple effects of the April 2024 halving.

Bitcoin has dropped more than 80% from peak to trough in prior bear markets.

Institutional conviction, tempered arithmetic

MicroStrategy remains the most visible corporate believer. The company has continued adding to its Bitcoin treasury, holding hundreds of thousands of BTC on its balance sheet as a core strategic position. Saylor’s public price targets have landed as high as $13 million per Bitcoin over a multi-decade horizon.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in the US market, bringing in billions in inflows from investors who previously had no clean on-ramp. Bernstein’s $150,000 near-term target implies substantial upside from current levels without requiring historic market share shifts.

Will the Fed "continue raising interest rates"? Will the "tightening cycle" of the late 1980s be repeated?

The Citi report points out that the current macro environment is highly similar to the tightening cycle of 1988-1989, when the economy remained resilient and inflation pressures gradually accumulated, followed by a slowdown in economic activity before policies shifted to easing. During that tightening cycle, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates 16 times in a row.

Rare alliance of arch-rivals! Musk and Altman support Dario Amodei's call to "slow down AI globally"

Anthropic's Amodei issued a call to "slow down AI globally," and to everyone's surprise, rivals Musk and Altman both publicly endorsed the initiative. The three industry giants unanimously agreed to grant third-party access to "employee-level" evaluation rights and to implement coordinated deceleration measures. Altman went further, announcing that OpenAI will not IPO this year. The resignation of a researcher and a collective breakout of uncontrollable AI systems have ignited long-standing industry fears.
