Toyota will recall more than 508,000 Camry hybrid vehicles in the United States due to a defect in the instrument display system of some vehicles, which could result in the screen remaining black when the car is started and prevent several safety warnings from appearing. After the news emerged, Toyota's share price fell back.

Over 500,000 vehicles recalled in the US

This recall in the United States involves 2025 and 2026 model year Camry hybrids, a total of 508,354 units, all equipped with a 7-inch instrument display. According to Toyota, the same issue affects about 655,000 Camry vehicles worldwide.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that if the display screen fails, the driver may not be able to see indicators for turn signals, hazard lights, or warnings for seat belts and the smart key system. This reduces the level of information provided to the driver and increases the risk of accidents.

Problem concentrated in 7-inch displays

Toyota says that the affected models are mainly certain versions equipped with the smaller instrument screens, including some LE, SE, and Nightshade models. The XLE and XSE versions equipped with a 12.3-inch display are not included in this recall.

Regulatory documents also state that these vehicles do not comply with US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, and therefore a recall procedure is necessary.

Dealers will update software free of charge

Toyota says that dealers will resolve this problem through a software update, and owners will not bear any costs. Notices for the US market are expected to begin being sent out from September 21, continuing until early October.

This recall comes as Toyota is still expanding its hybrid business. In the first half of 2026, Camry sales increased by 15.3% year-on-year, and as demand for electrified vehicles continues to grow, the importance of this model to Toyota is rising further.
