  1. According to data from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, as of the week ending August 18, net short positions on the Japanese yen increased by approximately 25% week-on-week, reaching about 53,000 contracts, indicating a temporary rebound in short interest.
  2. Although the weekly increase was notable, the current scale of net short positions remains less than one-third of the July level, when yen shorts were significantly reduced due to joint intervention by Japan and the US, briefly hitting a 25-month high of around 163,000 contracts.
  3. Since the US dollar to yen exchange rate touched a three-month low of about 155.2 on the electronic trading system on August 3, the rate has remained just below the 160 mark. The market generally regards 160 as a short-term resistance level, which helps curb further expansion of short positions.
  4. Net yen positions have remained in short territory since early March, but the current scale of shorts has shrunk considerably compared to the July peak. Going forward, attention will be paid to changes in the US-Japan interest rate differential and signals from the Bank of Japan's policy, which may guide further position adjustments.
