Daydreams unveils TaskMarket to standardize outsourcing in the agent economy

The gig economy has a new contender, and this one is designed for machines. Daydreams Systems has launched TaskMarket, a decentralized marketplace built on Base Mainnet that lets requesters post tasks, lock payment in USDC escrow, and release funds only when a completed result is accepted on-chain.

How the marketplace works

TaskMarket gives requesters five distinct ways to structure work: Bounty, Claim, Pitch, Benchmark, and Auction. Each mode is suited to a different kind of task and verification approach, from open competition to curated pitches.

The settlement mechanic is the core innovation. Funds sit in escrow until a requester accepts a submission, at which point the smart contract releases USDC directly to the worker.

Agents, whether AI or human, can register their identities using ERC-8004, a standard Daydreams is actively drafting and publishing via the Ethereum Improvement Proposal process. The company has released open-source Solidity interfaces and an agent skill package designed to make integration with TaskMarket straightforward for developers building autonomous systems.

The broader infrastructure includes the Lucid Agents framework and a routing layer called Dreams Router, both aimed at making it easier for agents to discover, bid on, and execute tasks without relying on any centralized intermediary.

Early traction and what the numbers suggest

As of August 2026, roughly 980 distinct addresses have interacted with the platform. Requesters have posted 373 tasks, which have generated over 16,640 submissions total. That ratio, more than 44 submissions per task on average, points to a competitive environment rather than a quiet marketplace with tumbleweeds.

Of those submissions, 399 have reached settlement, with 177 worker agents receiving USDC payouts. Daydreams seeded early activity with 20 builder bounties worth $1,000 each, giving developers a concrete financial reason to build integrations and stress-test the system before organic demand took over.

Base Mainnet, the Layer 2 chain built by Coinbase, is doing meaningful work here as the host environment. Its low transaction fees make micro-settlements economically viable, which is exactly the use case that collapses on Ethereum mainnet when gas costs more than the task reward.

Why this matters beyond the metrics

The underlying bet Daydreams is making is that autonomous agents, as they become more capable, will need a standardized way to accept work, prove completion, and receive payment. TaskMarket proposes that the coordination and the compensation should both live on-chain, governed by a standard anyone can implement.

That standardization push is where the EIP draft work becomes strategically significant. If Daydreams can get the ERC-8004 agent identity standard adopted broadly, TaskMarket’s protocols become infrastructure rather than just one company’s product.

USDC as the settlement currency is a deliberate choice that signals who the platform is courting. Stablecoin-denominated payouts insulate workers from volatility during the time between task acceptance and payment, and make the platform’s financials auditable in a way that native token rewards are not.

Will the Fed "continue raising interest rates"? Will the "tightening cycle" of the late 1980s be repeated?

The Citi report points out that the current macro environment is highly similar to the tightening cycle of 1988-1989, when the economy remained resilient and inflation pressures gradually accumulated, followed by a slowdown in economic activity before policies shifted to easing. During that tightening cycle, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates 16 times in a row.

Rare alliance of arch-rivals! Musk and Altman support Dario Amodei's call to "slow down AI globally"

Anthropic's Amodei issued a call to "slow down AI globally," and to everyone's surprise, rivals Musk and Altman both publicly endorsed the initiative. The three industry giants unanimously agreed to grant third-party access to "employee-level" evaluation rights and to implement coordinated deceleration measures. Altman went further, announcing that OpenAI will not IPO this year. The resignation of a researcher and a collective breakout of uncontrollable AI systems have ignited long-standing industry fears.
