Trump Says It's "Time to Teach Canada You Can't Do This Anymore" After Trade Talks Break Down

12:19 PM EDT, 08/26/2026 (MT Newswires) -- US President Trump on Wednesday said it was "time to teach Canada you can't do this anymore" after trade talks broke down last week and Canada responded to US the imposition of $25 billion of fresh tariffs with C$28 billion of dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs. Talks between Canada and the US collapsed last Friday after Prime Minister Mark Carney said last-minute demands by the United States made the deal unacceptable. On Saturday, the US introduced 50% tariffs on specific Canadian goods worth about C$28 billion. "I had a deal, that was a pretty good deal, you know, quite good," Trump told Glenn Beck Wednesday in an interview on the Glenn Beck Program. "They don't have anything that we have to have, OK, we can get by. I mean, there are a couple of things that would make it a little inconvenient, but we can get them elsewhere," said Trump. "And it's time to teach Canada you can't do this anymore," added the US president in the interview. Tuesday, Canada announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on nearly C$28bn of US imports, targeting goods including steel, furniture, appliances and fish. The measures take effect Sept. 8 and broadly mirror the US targets.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated that there are "ways" to implement the plan without increasing the deficit, but did not disclose specific cost-offset measures. She noted that the Treasury has studied this for "quite some time," and emphasized that "putting more money in Americans' pockets should be everyone's goal." House Speaker Mike Johnson said he had communicated with the President on this issue the previous night, but specific details have not yet been finalized, and it will take some time before the plan is implemented.
