The Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol cluster has set December 2029 as the deadline for making Ethereum’s base layer quantum-resistant across its execution, consensus, and data layers. In a post published Monday, the team stated that this self-imposed timeline is non-negotiable until at least January 2027, at which point the situation will be reassessed based on quantum computing advancements and external expert guidance.

Industry-wide quantum readiness goals
The target aligns closely with migration timelines established independently by major technology groups including Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft, all of which have chosen 2029 as their own benchmarks for quantum security upgrades. This parallel timing underscores a growing industry consensus on the perceived risks and necessary precautions relating to the potential impact of quantum computing.
The Protocol cluster described “Q-day,” the hypothetical moment a quantum computer could break the cryptography underpinning Ethereum wallets, as potentially arriving as early as 2030. However, it characterized this as an intentionally cautious estimate, acknowledging that most credible forecasts place Q-day further in the future or question whether it will happen at all.
“Ethereum should plan for Q-day as early as 2030, even though most credible estimates are later and it may never arrive,” the Protocol cluster wrote.
Roadmap and timeline pressures
To meet its 2029 quantum-resistant target, Ethereum’s protocol team plans to deliver “Glamsterdam” in December 2026 and achieve full post-quantum readiness by the 2029 deadline. This requires implementing hard forks at an average interval of 7.2 months, which the team conceded provides little margin for error. Unlike previous sequential updates, future hard forks will need to run in parallel to meet the aggressive schedule mapped out in the draft roadmap, which features seven forks through 2029.
The Protocol cluster evaluated 62 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) for the upcoming “Hegotá” hard fork, creating a unified tier list based on 397 grades from nine client teams and dozens of researchers and engineers. Of these, only two proposals—FOCIL (fork-choice enforced inclusion lists) on the consensus layer and Frame Transactions on the execution layer—were marked essential for integration.
Frame Transactions will make account abstraction native to Ethereum, allowing new cryptographic signature schemes to be adopted without a separate hard fork each time. This change offers a way for accounts to migrate from the widely used secp256k1 keys, which could eventually become vulnerable to quantum attacks.

“Frame Transactions allow new signature schemes without a hard fork for each one, giving accounts a route away from secp256k1 keys,” the Protocol cluster stated.
EIP selections and community engagement
Among the 62 proposals reviewed for Hegotá, 28—including EIP-8363, which suggested tapering issuance and burning the difference—were not selected for inclusion. The cluster emphasized that these decisions do not reflect judgments on the merits of the proposals themselves. Instead, it argued that questions of issuance policy affect all stakers and holders and are better addressed through broader community processes rather than within the scope of a single fork.
