UK natural gas prices surge sharply, Bank of England may be forced to adjust its monetary policy stance
智通财经2026/09/10 11:41- The UK natural gas price has surged to its highest level since late 2022, already exceeding the adverse scenario peak assumed in the Bank of England’s July monetary policy report. The central bank had projected a natural gas price peak of around 197 pence per therm for Q4, while the current market price is close to 201 pence per therm. The upward movement in energy prices poses new challenges for monetary policy.
- At present, the majority of the Monetary Policy Committee members do not favor an immediate rate hike. Testimonies in parliamentary hearings indicate that the overall stance has not turned hawkish; domestic underlying inflationary pressures are relatively mild, the labor market continues to weaken, and financial conditions have already tightened, all of which diminish the need for an immediate rate hike.
- The market widely predicts that the voting at the September policy meeting will likely maintain a 6-to-3 split in favor of keeping rates unchanged, with only three members supporting a rate hike. The general market expectation is for interest rates to remain unchanged for an extended period, but the balance of risks has clearly tilted towards higher inflation.
- According to institutional analysis, if energy costs continue to rise, the Bank of England may adjust its external communication approach, similar to the policy stance following the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict in March, retaining policy options through more hawkish language, without necessarily implementing a rate hike immediately.
