Toyota to Launch Hydrogen Fuel Cell Version of Hilux in 2028

11:23 AM EDT, 09/14/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Toyota Motor (TM) said Monday it plans to launch a hydrogen fuel cell version of its Hilux pickup truck in 2028. The vehicle will target a driving range of more than 400 kilometers and towing capacity of up to 2.5 metric tons, Toyota said. The company also unveiled its third-generation fuel cell system for heavy-duty commercial applications, with output and durability doubled from the previous generation, 20% improved fuel efficiency and significantly lower costs. Toyota said it will supply the system for 40 heavy duty vehicles under Scania's Pilot Partner program, with the first trucks expected to begin operations in Q1 of 2027. The company said it will also provide the fuel cell system for Iveco's new-generation fuel cell electric vehicles, with validation expected to start in Q4 and on-road trials in H1 of 2027.
