- The Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen launched another attack on Saudi Arabia on Monday, firing dozens of missiles and drones at an air force base in Khamis Mushait in the south. Targets included hangars, radar, runways, and ammunition depots, in retaliation for airstrikes on Yemen by Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities issued emergency alerts for the area and three other southern cities. On the same day, Gulf Arab nations postponed planned talks with Iran, heightening concerns that the conflict could spread and threaten global oil supplies.
- The Iranian Revolutionary Guard stated that a Panama-flagged oil tanker exploded and caught fire after hitting a mine in the so-called prohibited zone south of the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command immediately disputed this, saying the tanker “was hit by an Iranian missile last month and lost its ability to sail.” Iran stated that the vessel, named El Gaia, was on a list of 77 violating ships and warned it could face fines, detention, or confiscation, while reiterating that the strait was closed. According to the International Maritime Organization, 79 incidents have occurred in the Strait of Hormuz since the war began, causing the deaths of 22 seafarers.
- On the diplomatic front, a meeting originally scheduled for Monday in Oman to discuss reopening the Strait of Hormuz with Iran and the Gulf countries was postponed, with Iran stating the decision was made at Saudi Arabia’s request. Before the war, 20% of global oil exports passed through this strait. The US Secretary of Energy said that, with US support, the number of ships secretly transiting the strait is increasing, but independent monitoring agencies believe that as fighting escalated this month, transport volume may have declined. On Monday, the Saudi Crown Prince met in Jeddah with US Central Command Commander Cooper; according to three sources, Washington has so far refused Saudi Arabia’s requests for direct military intervention.
- Recently, the Houthi forces have made rapid advances in Yemen, and captured multiple territories last Friday, including Perim Island at the entrance to the Red Sea. On the same day, another attack paralyzed Saudi Arabia’s east-west oil pipeline, with Riyadh blaming Iraqi militants supported by Iran. This pipeline is a key route for Gulf oil to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. The International Organization for Migration estimates that since the beginning of the month, 82,000 Yemenis have fled their homes due to the fighting.
- Over the weekend, Trump said he had spoken with the Saudi Crown Prince, while the Houthi forces also contacted Washington, urging the US not to intervene. Trump predicted that the Iran war would end soon after the midterm elections in November, and that oil prices would “drop like a stone.” On Monday, crude oil prices rose more than 4% during trading and eventually closed up about 1%. US diesel retail prices set a new record high at $6.23 per gallon. Traders said that if Saudi Arabia’s oil pipeline remains out of service for a prolonged period, global oil supply could decrease by as much as 4%.
