Canadian stock index futures decline as bond market sell-off and Federal Reserve decision draw attention

  1. Canadian blue-chip stock futures retreated on Tuesday as surging oil prices and rising U.S. Treasury yields unsettled global investors, with the market awaiting the Federal Reserve's rate decision on Wednesday.
  2. S&P/TSX index September futures fell about 0.7% during the morning session.
  3. U.S. Treasury yields broke above 5%, reaching their highest level since 2007, while high oil prices intensified concerns about long-term disruption to energy supplies.
  4. Brent crude oil futures rose nearly 2% after Saudi energy infrastructure was attacked on Monday, and Gulf Arab states postponed planned talks with Iran.
  5. Currency market traders are currently pricing in a more than 90% chance of a Fed rate hike on Wednesday, with the policy meeting set to begin later that day.
  6. Spot gold fell about 0.7%, hovering near a more-than-one-month low, while silver declined about 0.6%. Mining stocks could open lower after sharp losses in the previous session.
  7. On Tuesday, the Canadian government's 10-year bond yield climbed more than 2 basis points, following the rise in U.S. Treasury yields.
  8. The Canadian prime minister's summit with global investors this week is also drawing attention, as the country seeks to attract large-scale investment in mining, energy, infrastructure, and technology projects.
