Exchange-Traded Funds Rise, Equity Futures up Pre-Bell Monday as Oil Prices Decline

09:23 AM EDT, 09/21/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was up 0.7% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 1.1% in Monday's premarket activity, as oil prices fell. US stock futures were up, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.7%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures gaining 0.8%, and Nasdaq futures rising 1.1% before the start of regular trading. Federal Reserve Chicago President Austan Goolsbee is slated to speak at 6:30 am ET on Monday. Meanwhile, the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank's monthly National Activity Index fell to a reading of minus 0.04 in August from 0.08 in July, as expected in a survey compiled by Bloomberg. In premarket action, bitcoin was up by 5%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 4.7% higher, Ether ETF (EETH) advanced 3.4%, and Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was up 4.1%. Power Play: Consumer The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) was down 0.1%, the Vanguard Consumer Staples Index Fund ETF Shares (VDC) was inactive, and the iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive. The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) gained 0.7%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was inactive, while the State Street SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) was 0.9% higher. Tesla (TSLA) shares were up more than 1.4% pre-bell despite the company facing a California civil rights trial over allegations that Black workers at its Fremont assembly plant experienced racial harassment and discrimination, with proceedings beginning today, Reuters reported. Winners and Losers: Health Care The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) advanced 0.2%, the Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) was inactive, while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) slipped 1.3%. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was up 0.9%. Novo Nordisk (NVO) stock was down 4.2% premarket after the company outlined lower-than-expected long-term financial and pipeline targets, including plans for 150 billion Danish kroner ($23.04 billion) in pipeline sales in 2035 and the launch of at least five multi-blockbusters by 2030. Technology The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) gained 1.3%, the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 1.3% higher, and the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, the State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) was up 1.9%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 2.3%. Meta Platforms (META) shares were up 2.2% in premarket activity after news outlets reported the company challenged the UK's media regulator over additional scrutiny under the Online Safety Act. Financial The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) advanced 0.6%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 1.4%, while its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), was 1.8% lower. Goldman Sachs (GS) shares traded up 1.4% in early-hours activity after reports that the investment bank is helping Carlyle Group (CG) arrange a potential $400 million initial public offering for its Highway Roop Precision Technologies unit. Industrial The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLI) advanced 0.8%, while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) were inactive. Critical Metals (CRML) stock was up over 26% before the opening bell after US President Donald Trump announced a security agreement involving the US, Denmark, and Greenland. Energy The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) was down by 0.9%. Commodities Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil retreated by 3% to $97.30 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was down 2% to $2.85 per 1 million British Thermal Units. The United States Oil Fund (USO) decreased by 2.3%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 1.3% lower. Gold futures for November retreated by 0.7% to $4,393.60 an ounce on the Comex. Silver futures lost by 0.2% to $67.04 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) was down by 0.3%, and the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) rose by 0.8%.
