The final value of the US Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index for September dropped to 48.1, reaching a four-month low. Consumers expect inflation over the next year to be 4.6%, higher than last month's 4%. The expected annualized inflation rate for the next 5 to 10 years is 3.4%, the highest level since May. US gasoline and diesel prices have climbed, and mortgage rates have surpassed 7%. According to the survey leader, despite political differences, consumers unanimously believe the economic outlook has worsened.

Due to growing concerns about rising prices and the economic outlook, the US consumer confidence index in September fell to its lowest level in four months.

According to a survey released on Friday, the final value of the University of Michigan September consumer confidence index dropped to 48.1.

Consumers expect prices to rise by 4.6% over the next year, higher than last month's expectation of 4%. At the same time, they anticipate an annualized inflation rate of 3.4% over the next five to ten years, the highest level since May.

September saw a deterioration in consumer confidence as diesel prices hit record highs and gasoline prices continued to climb. Higher gas station prices have intensified longstanding discontent among workers over the persistently high US cost of living.

Inflation remains stubbornly high. Prices are rising faster than wage growth, and mortgage rates have soared above 7%, making it harder for many people to achieve their goal of purchasing a home.

Survey director Joanne Hsu stated in a release: “Despite political divisions, consumers are unanimous in seeing the economic outlook worsen.”

The report shows that since the beginning of this year, consumer confidence has declined among all groups, regardless of age, education, region, political affiliation, or income level.

In September, the index measuring expectations for the economic outlook in the next year dropped to its lowest level since 2022. Consumers' expectations for their personal financial situation also worsened.

Conditions for purchasing durable goods have improved slightly, but this is partly “because people believe buying now helps avoid future price increases,” Hsu said.

The consumer expectations index dropped to a four-month low, and the current conditions index also declined.

This survey covered responses from August 25 to September 21.
