Toshiba’s Expansion Fails to Shake HDD Duopoly: Market Share Only Reaches 16.8% and Faces Capital, Technology BottlenecksToshiba announced plans to double its hard disk drive (HDD) capacity by fiscal year 2027, sparking market fears of intensified competition and causing single-day share price drops of 10% for Western Digital (WDC) and Seagate (STX). However, this expansion target refers to total storage capacity (EB), not physical shipment volume. According to industry benchmarks, even if Western Digital and Seagate maintain around 25% annual capacity growth, and Toshiba manages to double its capacity, its global capacity share will increase only slightly from 11.2% in fiscal year 2025 to 16.8%. This pushes overall industry supply growth from 25% to just 33%, which falls far short of the speculated 30% market share reported by the media. The reported 60 billion yen (approximately $380 million) investment for expansion accounts for only 12% of Toshiba's roughly $3.1 billion annual HDD revenue, which is insufficient to support the goal of doubling capacity. Western Digital and Seagate typically allocate 4% to 6% of their revenue to capital expenditures, which is enough to support 25% capacity growth; on a linear basis, a 100% capacity expansion would require at least 20% of revenue. More importantly, the two leading companies chiefly increase capacity by raising the storage density per platter, whereas Toshiba significantly lags behind in areal density technology and can only increase total capacity by adding more physical disks and production lines. This requires much more capital expenditure and supply chain investment than its current budget allows.Toshiba has consistently lagged behind Western Digital and Seagate in technology roadmaps; its previously planned 30TB product has only just begun sampling after delays. If there are any setbacks in 2027 regarding a 12-disk architecture, glass substrates, or customer certifications, the expansion schedule will be directly hindered. Back in 2022, Toshiba claimed it would raise its market share above 25%, yet its actual share not only failed to improve but fell to 11%. The current market selloff is mainly due to misinterpretation of sensational headlines. Bernstein maintains an "outperform" rating on Seagate and Western Digital, with target prices of $1,350 and $770 respectively.

According to a report by Iran's Fars News Agency on June 3, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy has taken action against at least seven "violating" oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz over the past five days. Citing multiple sources, the report states that although the US government has consistently claimed that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and under US control, in reality, Iran has acted against more than one oil tanker on average per day.
